👍 We’ve developed a comprehensive guide for Muslims on responsible social media usage
In today’s digital age, we often live through our devices rather than the vibrant, colourful world around us. From Smartphones to iPads, we relish watching tasty dishes posted by others, we ‘meet’ people online, form relationships, and freely broadcast personal and family affairs, including marriage proposals and divorce stories. Every intimate experience and emotion, ranging from police brutality to hope and joy, is documented and shared on social media. We celebrate our victories, eat our meals, get dressed, and share loving moments with our spouses in front of an audience.
Muslims, too, are active content creators and consumers, sharing moments that some argue are too sacred for public viewing. While this trend has faced criticism, many of us have accepted it as the new norm or reluctantly, as an unstoppable current.
We need to be wary of the people behind these social media platforms and their sinister motives. It’s terrifying to see how algorithms have been developed to constantly learn more and more about you, so it can drip-feed your nafs, or basest desires and inclinations, keeping you addicted and always coming back for more. Minutes turn into hours on TikTok as the algorithm has understood you better than you understand yourself, serving you with content that you enjoy repeatedly.
