Sunnahs for Eid ul-Adha
Eid is a joyous time, a time for celebration, it’s a sign of your love for Allah and being happy and festive on Eid is a symbol of Islam. Here are 8 Sunnah Acts for Eid ul-Adha:
1. Perform Ghusl
The best way to feel fresh for Eid prayers is to perform ghusl before going out to pray. It’s understood that it’s better to do ghusl after Fajr, but before Fajr is acceptable too.
2. Eat After the Eid Prayer
Unlike Eid Al-Fitr, you should eat after the Eid prayer on Eid Al-Adha and if you’ve offered a sacrifice, you can and should eat from your Qurbani meat. If you didn’t offer a sacrifice, it’s fine for you to eat before the prayer.
3. Dress Up
Eid is a celebration, so it makes sense that you should dress up and wear your best clothes and perfume.
4. Recite Takbeer
From the first day of Dhul Hijjah, you should’ve begun saying takbeer (Allahu akbar) frequently. This ends at sunset on the final day of Tashreeq (13th Dhul Hijjah). So, keep going!
You should recite: Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, laa ilaaha ill-Allah, wa Allahu akbar, Allah akbar, wa lillaah il-hamd.
Translation: Allah is Most Great, Allah is Most Great, there is no God but Allah, Allah is Most Great, Allah is Most Great, and to Allah be praise.
5. Go to the Eid Prayer
According to a hadith narrated in Bukhari, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) commanded both men and women to go out to the prayer on Eid. It’s also a great opportunity to meet people in your local community. Don’t forget: traditionally, the masjid is a meeting place too.
6. Exchange Well Wishes
Congratulate one another by saying “Eid Mubarak”. Send well wishes upon one another by saying “Taqabbala Allah minna wa minkum” (May Allah accept [good deeds] from us and from you).
7. Switch Routes
On your return from the masjid, use a different route than the one you used to get there. Jaabir ibn ‘Abdullah (ra) said: “When Allah’s Messenger would go out on the day of Eid by one route, he would return by another” [Timidhi].
8. Eat and Drink
The days of Eid are not for fasting. In fact, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “The days of Tashreeq are days of eating, drinking and remembering Allah” [Muslim].
