Karimia Institute welcomed a cohort of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) recruits for a fact-finding and cultural awareness visit to our Masjid-Ash-Shifa (Bobbersmill Community Centre), providing future firefighters with valuable insight into the layout, function, and community role of a typical British mosque.
The visit was jointly hosted by Colonel Amjad Parvez, Leadership and Management Consultant, and Maulana Syed Ikram, Imam of the Mosque. Together, they offered recruits a detailed explanation of the building, highlighting key structural features, congregation flow patterns, and areas of operational relevance during emergency response scenarios.
The programme was designed to strengthen understanding between emergency services and local faith communities, ensuring firefighters are better equipped to respond safely and sensitively to incidents involving places of worship.
Recruits were briefed on:
- Typical mosque architecture and internal layout
- High occupancy prayer times and community activities
- Fire safety considerations unique to religious buildings
- Cultural protocols and respectful conduct during entry
- The role of mosques as community hubs during crises
Colonel Parvez emphasised the importance of practical, on-site learning for emergency personnel, noting that “familiarity with community spaces enhances operational readiness and builds trust between services and the public.”
Maulana Ikram provided historical and cultural context, explaining the daily functions of the mosque and the significance of its various spaces, including the prayer hall, ablution areas, and teaching rooms.
The visit concluded with an open discussion, allowing recruits to ask operational and cultural questions, strengthening mutual understanding and reinforcing Karimia Institute’s commitment to community cohesion and public service engagement.
Karimia Institute extends its appreciation to Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service for prioritising community-centred training and looks forward to continued collaboration in support of public safety and inter-community understanding.
